The MSc Clinical Trials by Distance Learning

Support

The students are encouraged to set up a ‘homepage’ on Blackboard. This is a personalised web page for students to share professional and/or personal information about themselves with the students. By encouraging all students and tutors to create home pages a sense of community begins to build.

Students are also encouraged to use the asynchronous forum to introduce themselves to the tutors and their fellow students.

Students are then free to begin their studies. They can access the course material from Blackboard as and when they choose. A ‘bookmarking’ system has been developed to aid study i.e. a student can exit a session without completing it and return automatically to the last page they studied when they open the session again.

Although students receive tutorial feedback via e-mail, they are encouraged to use the discussion forums in Blackboard to discuss the sessions amongst themselves and to ask questions of the tutors. Because queries, questions and suggestions are shared in this way (rather than privately via email), the other students have the opportunity to share the information exchange and contribute to the discussion. It also creates a sense of community and a support system for the students. Students also have access to their own forum, “The Coffee Shop”, which is ‘student only’.
